Selling the Miata

Working on the ad right now, and hoping to sell it very soon after getting back to Seattle. In a perfect world I’d have the sale ready to be made before I flew back home.

I have no idea what to price it at though. I put up a very quick teaser on a small miata forum w ith just one image and a few of the most valuable parts highlighted at $7000 and got a ton of responses, so I pulled the ad. I wasn't expecting that much.

There’s about $22 ,000 worth of parts on her, and a fair number of those things—coilovers , rollbar, etc. —regularly go for 90% of the retail price when sold secondhand . Some napkin math makes me think I could get 13-14 k if I parted it out, but I don’t want to do that.

I’d actually be pretty happy with the $ 7k offers I already got, but... I mean... If I can get more I’m not complaining. Thoughts?

Plan is to finance a Monster, pay off this current trip, invest a bit and.... Well. I’ll share the rest later. I’ve been rethinking some life things.

Yay another getting into bikes over cars :) A Miata is fun, but unless that motor is heavily modified its got nothing on even middle weight motorcycles.

If you have another car I’d suggest you keep that as backup. I’d think the 797 Monster would be the equivalent to a Miata, but if you want power get a modern water cooled model.

Myself I picked up an Aprilia Shiver 750 recently, which is the 4th bike I’ve owned in 5 years. If you want a good road bike, possibly you should consider looking at a Shiver/Dorsoduro 900. Still Italian, good build quality and components, sounds brilliant, a bit heavy but has sharp geometry while slightly cheaper to buy and service than a Ducati Monster.

You’re likely to get $5 k to $7 k for it. Mods don’t add value in the eyes of the general public unless you find the right buyer. Everyone else is going to see it as a mod that’s been driven/modified hard.

Oh, I’m not going for the general public. I’m aiming at the M iata guys, where words like “Xida coilovers” and Blackbird Fabworx rollbar” makes mouths water. I've seen $1900 used Xidas get snapped up instantly, when you can get new for... $2100. The resale on some of these parts is nuts

I'll still probably post to Craigslist, but I'm definitely expecting a forum buy from a guy who sees a crazy good deal for parts that he'd already want on just about any miata

I speak as somebody who has experienced making payments on something that needs frequent repairs. L emme tell ya ... it fuckin’ sucks. That’s why I don’t get down with the whole DeMuro “Buy this unreliable vehicle with an extended warranty, ” thing. Been there, done that, got the emotional scars T-shirt.

How many miles? Original engine/trans/diff? Where are you located?

I’m getting tempted into small Japanese sports cars for a weekend fun car . I’m in the Chicago area. I’m tall though, 6'3", and couldn’ t do an S2000 because the wheel wont adjust for me , similar issue with an NC . People have recommenced NAs/NBs because there are mods to help fit a taller driver, but still not sure if I’d fit. I’d be looking for one with upgrades something like yours and y our budget lines up well with mine. ;)

I’ll send you a message tomorrow, I’m 6"1 215 pounds and fit well, although you could gain another few inches by removing a section of the floor.

I am struggling to find a tall-guy-modded one to try on for size haha

Didn’t know removing a floor section was even possible! I’ve read a bit about removing some of the seat cushion foam or getting a shallower seat, but I have just started researching these earlier M iatas and I have much to learn about these cars, I think haha .

I could see someone on ClubRoadster scoop up your car! Miata.net is 50/50 since it’s a mix of boomers who leave things stock (and complain about mods) and younger owners who modify them to suit their needs.

Hmm good to know. Clubroadster is the forum I’m least familiar with, as I spend most of my time on miataturbo.net.

I do recall reading an incredibly inspiring hi-fi sound system build for an NC on club roadster years ago. It was truly a work of art

I don't need three Miatas lol. Already have the same problem you do with not being able to work on cars at home. So it's super slow for me to get anything done with my logistical train. And I refuse to pay anyone to do anything unless it's absolutely necessary.
